The Southern African Development Community (SADC) says struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was a leader worth emulating.

The SADC secretariat extended its condolences to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Madikizela and Mandela families, and the people of South Africa.

In a message, SADC says she was indeed one of the greatest heroines of the struggle against apartheid.

SADC led by a woman Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Tax says Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will forever be remembered by all for enduring years of suffering and for standing up against repressive apartheid forces, even in dangerous times.

It says the SADC Region is proud and fortunate to have shared the illustrious life of such a great African leader, South Africa’s Mother of the Nation.

The bloc says she represents a generation of courageous and fearless leaders who sacrificed and risked their lives to secure a better future for others.
