Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says he has decided to self-quarantine after coming into contact with the late eNCA cameraman, Lungile Tom.
Tom died from COVID-19 related complications on Wednesday morning. He was admitted to hospital in Cape Town on Sunday.
Winde says he had a one-on-one interview with Tom recently, being in close range for some time.
He says he is deemed a close contact and will now self-quarantine.
Winde says, “After doing our own screening and testing, with myself being involved in an interview last Thursday where Lungile was present and the cameraman in the interview, it is prudent for me to also follow those rules and so for the next seven days.”

Parliament pays tribute
The Presiding Officers of Parliament have expressed their sadness at the passing away of Tom.
In a statement, they say through his sharp eye and knowledge of Parliament, Tom brought the, often intricate, workings of the institution to many South African homes.
The Presiding officers say his news footage demonstrated remarkable passion, experience and creativity, and he spent time in the corridors of Parliament and, with patience, humility and passion, highlighted the happenings of Parliament to the people.
“The Presiding Officers of Parliament extend their heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr Tom, to his friends and eNCA colleagues and we wish them strength during this time. We also send our sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones to the Covid-19 pandemic and we wish all those who are infected a speedy recovery. We urge all people living in South Africa to continue to observe the government’s Covid-19 regulations and to adhere to all social-distancing and hygiene guidelines.”
