Political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi says the key question will be whether the SONA will include new ANC policies such as land redistribution.
In December the ANC’s 54th National Conference in Johannesburg resolved that the South African reserve bank be nationalised, the conference also resolved that there must be expropriation of land without compensation.
The resolution on expropriation of land however would require that section 25 of the constitution should be amended to give effect to that resolution.
Matshiqi questions if these proposals will find way into the State of the Nation Address. Matshiqi also notes that these proposals are one that ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa as well as investors might be opposed to.
“These are proposals I believe Ramaphosa does not support, certainly the markets ratings agency’s and investors will not support these policy measures. will they find their way to the state of the nation address that remains to be seen.”
