Wikipedia to pay special focus on women issues in Africa

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The most popular online resource Wikipedia has seen how rife gender inequality is in Africa and is trying to bridge the gap on Wikimedia, by creating content which will specifically focus on women’s contribution to the political, economic, scientific, cultural and heritage landscape, as well as the current socio-political status of women, in each country.

The Swedish Embassy with the University of South Africa is inviting the public to write articles or biographies on local women whom they think excel in their fields.

The works will then be published on Wikipedia.

Bobby Shabangu from WikimediaZA says that only 8% of women contribute to Wikipedia and they are trying to change that.

Karin Hernmarck Ahliny from the Embassy of Sweden says that main purpose of this project is to tell women’s stories.

“We do have a few pages of women but most of them are there because of their relations with men rather than what they have achieved themselves.”
