Western Cape’s death toll from COVID-19 increases by more than 200 in a week

The COVID-19 death toll in the Western Cape has increased by more than 200 in the past week after another 53 deaths were reported in the province on Friday.

Seven-hundred and four of the 908 COVID-19 deaths recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic are in the Western Cape. According to the latest figures from the Department of Health, the country now has 43 434 cases after 2 642 new infections were recorded nationally on Friday.

According to figures, the Western Cape had 42 deaths at the end of Level 5 lockdown on April 30 and by the end of Level 4 lockdown on May 31, the province had a total of 503 deaths.

In the last five days of Level 3 lockdown which kicked in on Monday, the province has recorded 201 new deaths. This brings the overall death toll to 704 in the Western Cape.

Among those who have died of COVID-19 in the province are four health care workers at the Tygerberg Hospital.

Meanwhile, the entire Tygerberg sub-district which includes Bellville, Elsies River and Goodwood has been identified as one of the COVID-19 hotspots in the Cape Metro.

The province’s overall confirmed COVID-19 cases are now standing at 28 807.
