Western Cape Finance Minister David Maynier, has welcomed reports that the United Kingdom is likely to remove South Africa from the ‘red list’ when it reviews travel restrictions this week.

A report in the Sunday Telegraph quotes British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as saying the UK’s “red list” of destinations would be slashed to nine from 54.

Maynier says the provincial government has worked hard to engage with all key decision-makers both in the UK and in South Africa, including writing to the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, the Right Honourable Elizabeth Truss.

Maynier says the UK is a key source market for tourism in the Western Cape.

“In 2019, approximately 194,900 UK tourists visited the Western Cape, spending on average R24,200 per tourist. And so, removing South Africa from the UK ‘red list’ and easing travel restrictions for those travelling between the two countries ahead of our summer season, will provide much-needed relief for the tourism and hospitality sector.”

Health Minister Doctor Joe Phaahla says 14 million more people have to be vaccinated by December in order to reach government’s 70% target.

Phaahla is in Durban to round up the Vooma Vaccination Weekend Campaign.

He says the initiative serves as a platform to intensify government’s national vaccine roll-out programme.
