Western Cape police confirm constable’s death following shootout at New Somerset Hospital

Western Cape police have confirmed that the police member who was seriously wounded during a shooting incident last night at the New Somerset Hospital, behind the Waterfront in Cape Town, has died in hospital.

The official was injured after a patient who was about to be discharged grabbed the policeman’s firearm and shot the member.

Police spokesperson, Novella Potelwa says the suspect also shot and killed two other patients who died on the scene.

“A 32 year old police constable who sustained serious injury during a shooting incident at Somerset Hospital in Cape Town has died, the Western Cape provincial Commissioner Lieutenant general Patakile has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the Sea Point police official and those who died during the shooting incident. Details of the deceased police official will be released once his next-of-kin has been informed,” says Potelwa.
