The Western Cape Local Government Department says it’s concerned about the current state of dams in the Karoo.

Current statistics show that the average dam levels in the Gouritz River catchment area is just below 18%.

The average dam levels for the Western Cape are closing in on the 60% mark with major dams improving on a weekly basis.

However, the Department’s spokesperson James Brent-Styan says this does not mean the province is out of danger.

“Big dams like the Theewaterskloof Dam has increased significantly, it’s currently standing at 48.7%. That’s quite an increase. The Clanwilliam Dam up the West Coast is at about 98% this week. We want to call on consumers to continue to save water. We see some areas in the province still in dire straits. The Karoo in particular, where dam levels continue to remain very low, below 18%,” adds Brent-Styan.
