Western Cape Education Minister Debbie Schäfer has welcomed the cancellation of this year’s Plett Rage festival as the second wave of coronavirus hits the country.
Teens are among those who have shown the highest number of new infections. Schäfer has called on learners to avoid any such gatherings and parties this year.
There are concerns young people could pass the virus on to more vulnerable people like their grandparents. The national government is urging people to continue wearing face masks, practice social distancing, and regular hand washing.
Schäfer has called on the support of parents to convince their children not to attend parties and other social gatherings.
“It is understandable that our matrics and other learners want to let their hair down after a very stressful year, but we are now entering a critical time in the pandemic. We cannot afford another lockdown, and we must keep ourselves and others safe. This takes a great degree of personal responsibility from each and every one of us. Our matrics are now entering the adult world, it is time to show the responsibility that we expect of adults.”
South Africa in the second wave of coronavirus pandemic:
South Africa recorded 6 709 new coronavirus cases yesterday. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize highlighted the four provinces with the highest number of coronavirus infections. These are the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
South Africa has a total of 828 598 coronavirus cases.
