Weekend packed with Absa Premiership matches

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A full round of Absa Premiership matches will be played this weekend. They start on Friday night with the match between Maritzburg United and Baroka FC.

Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Golden Arrows on Sunday and they go into the weekend at the top of the log. However, they on the same number of points as Chippa United, Baroka FC and Orlando Pirates.

But defending champions, Bidvest Wits, are still languishing at the bottom of the log with ten points from 12 matches.

Wits were recently crowned Telkom Knockout champions after beating Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in the final.

However, their league campaign tells a different story altogether.

After a goalless draw against Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday, Wits is traveling to Polokwane City on Saturday for their next league encounter.

With three matches before the halfway mark in the league, the Clever Boys are at the bottom of the log.

“It’s a concern and a big one. But it’s a great feeling to have people who fought for the league and won it. At least everybody has got that feeling that things are getting back to place and we will start winning and getting our form back,” said Bidvest Wits Defender, Buhle Mkhwanazi.

Meanwhile, MTN8 champions Supersport United will take on Cape Town City at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

On Tuesday, Amatsatsantsa played to a goalless draw against Orlando Pirates. Had they taken their chances, they would have easily won that match by an avalanche of goals.

City, on the other hand, lost 4-2 against Maritzburg United in their home match played at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu. This leaves supporters wondering whether the wheels are coming off for Benni McCarthy’s side after starting the season on a high note.

It should be a titanic clash between Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday afternoon in KwaMashu.

Abafana besthende should be wary of the Pitso Mosimane-led team.

The Brazilians humiliated Baroka on Tuesday with 4-0.

However, Arrows could also pose a danger as they are wounded after a 2-1 loss away to Free State Stars on Wednesday.

In Saturday’s other matches; Kaizer Chiefs will be away to Platinum Stars, while Pirates and Ajax Cape Town will host AmaZulu and Chippa United, respectively.

Lastly, on Sunday afternoon there will be a Free State derby with Celtic playing host to Free State Stars at the Doctor Molemela Stadium.
