The South African Weather Service has issued another warning of heavy rains over large parts of KwaZulu-Natal for Thursday that could cause flooding and mudslides.

This after a severe thunderstorm coupled with heavy rain, strong winds and hail struck Pietermaritzburg, Ndwendwe, Maphumulo and Mandeni Wednesday afternoon.

The provincial department of Cooperative Governance says disaster management teams have begun mop-up operations after the storm-damaged buildings and vehicles.

Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says, “Disruptive rainfall could lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, roads and bridges. These inclement weather conditions could result in localised mudslides. These inclement weather conditions are expected to affect the districts of Zululand, uThukela, uMkhanyakhude, Amajuba, Harry Gwala, uMgungundlovu, Ilembe and the eThekwini metro. MEC Hlomuka has appealed to holidaymakers and motorists to exercise extreme caution and patience on the roads.”
