Weak rand blamed for fuel hikes

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Energy Department has attributed the latest fuel price hike to the unprecedented weakening of the rand against the US dollar and sharp international oil price increases.

The record high fuel price increase came into effect at midnight and there are concerns it could negatively affect the freight and transport industry.

Petrol increased by 49 cents, diesel by 60 cents and the price of illuminating paraffin by 52 cents per litre.

Spokesperson for the Automobile Association of South Africa, Layton Beard says they are concerned about the effects of the hike on South Africa’s poor.
