The DA run City of Joburg says it will not be bullied by taxi associations to condone lawlessness. This follows Monday’s strike by members of the Alexandra Taxi Association. They are protesting against what they say is the ill-treatment by law enforcement agencies in the City of Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has been removing un-roadworthy, unlicensed and illegal vehicles including taxis from the roads across the city since the beginning of the year.
The taxi strike left large numbers of commuters stranded.
Johannesburg Public Safety MMC Michael Sun says: “One thing that we want to be very clear on is that we will not be bullied into submission of promotion of unlawfulness… So we are enforcing this across the board in the city. So having said that, we want to invite the taxi operators to engage with us in a more professional and mature manner. We believe that only when we work together we can find suitable and sustainable solutions to ensure the safety of our residents and motorists in the city.”
