The newly elected mayor of Johannesburg Jolidee Matongo says he hopes he will work together well with other political parties to best serve the interests of the residents of the City.

Matongo was nominated by the African National Congress (ANC).

He was announced as the new mayor of Johannesburg on Tuesday morning following the death of former Mayor Geoff Makhubo in July. Makhubo succumbed to COVID-19 related complications at the age of 53.

Matongo, who served on the mayoral committee of finance, was elected unopposed during a special council sitting.

“I really appreciate the honour and privilege to lead Africa’s preeminent city for the next few months. We hope that we will all pull together as political parties in the best interest of our residents. Ours is to serve the people of Johannesburg and put aside our political bickering and differences but put ahead the interests of the people of Johannesburg,” says Matongo.
