We need to prioritise climate change issues: SASSCAL

The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) is a multi-state joint initiative to respond to the challenges of global climate change.

The SASSCAL was established to add value southern Africa and to conceptualise, operationalise and to complement existing research and capacity development infrastructure and research initiatives in the region with regards to climate change and environmental issues.

Countries which are part of the SASSCAL are Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Germany.

SASSCAL recently secured funding of 10 million Euros from the German government.

Within the continent South Africa has one of the largest carbon footprints, However, it does not compare to countries in the northern hemisphere, who by far emit more damaging chemicals.

SASSCAL Executive Director Dr Jane Olwoch said, “I think it’s important that we prioritise climate change issues and environmental issues particularly if we want to grow the economy…”
