“We have our ANC back,” says a jubilant ANC delegate as Cyril Ramaphosa was announced as the new President of the ANC.

Ramaphosa’s supporters erupted with shouts of joy.
“We are so happy with our new president. These things with the Guptas will end now,” says Basebu Phopunyane from in North West.
“This is the unity that we wanted. What happened here will unite the ANC. Come 2019 we will not have any problems,” says Ditshele Ramoenyana, also from North West.
“This slate thing is not right. The slates did not win. It was the branches that decided,” says Mdingi Jongintaba, a delegate from Mpumalanga.

Jongintaba says the fact that people from both factions were included in the top 6, is a win for the party, an indication of unity.

Nkosinathi Nkosi, a delegate from Mpumalanga, says it does not really matter who is president, what is important is that the ANC has won.

But as Ramaphosa was announced president, not all were celebrating.

Many of the delegates from KwaZulu-Natal who supported Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma looked on with somber faces.

The mood in the Dlamini-Zuma-KwaZulu-Natal  camp improved as David Mabuza and Ace Magashula were announced as Deputy President and Secretary General respectively.
