We cannot rule out political motive in KwaMashu shooting: Mchunu

KwaZulu-Natal Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu say they cannot rule out a political motive in the KwaMashu Hostel shooting. He visited the scene where African National Congress (ANC) members Sthembiso Biyela and Malusi Ndlovu were shot and killed Sunday night.

Biyela’s wife is fighting for her life in hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.

Biyela had defected from the Inkatha Freedom Party to the ANC two months ago. He was the ANC chairperson at the hostel.

Mchunu says the police are also investigating reports that a hit squad is operating at the hostel.

Biyela’s brother Sipho says they are very concerned about the situation.

“It’s very hard, all we know is that he was elected the chairperson of the block, we also know that early this year he defected to the ANC from IFP. We are very concerned; the situation is very tense here at the hostel. We cannot rule out political motive. I think the SANDF (South African National Defence Force) can be able to help retain the situation to normality here at the hostel.”
