Colonel Derrick Moore of the Joint Operational Division says it has been difficult for SANDF members deployed on border lines to perform their duties.

A multi stakeholder disaster contingency meeting comprised of various government departments and civil society is expected to continue at the Musina police station in Limpopo on Thursday morning.

The meeting is about preparation and state of readiness in case a disastrous situation broke out in Zimbabwe that could lead to the influx of Zimbabweans through the Beit Bridge border posts.

The border line itself is porous with a large piece damaged, making it easy for people to cross over. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is manning the border.

Spokesperson of Musina Legal Advise Center Jacob Matakanye says the first meeting attended by police was held on Wednesday.

“We came with other organisations and other departments to come up with contingency plan for in case if people come in numbers running from the situation. First we must see that they get accommodation and they get food and health. We are saying we don’t know what is happening in Zimbabwe and when it is going to happen, but we are ready to help them in all sources as we have done before because now we are dealing with human beings.”
