African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer General, Paul Mashatile says they are poorer and weaker following the death of MP and former Ekurhuleni Mayor Duma Nkosi.

Nkosi died last Thursday night after a long battle with cancer at the age of  64.

The City of Ekurhuleni will meet on Tuesday to discuss the kind of funeral he will be accorded, with strong indications that he will be given a civic funeral this Friday.

Speaking outside Nkosi’s home in Thokoza east of Johannesburg, Mashatile says they will always remember Nkosi as someone who selflessly worked for the people.

Saddened

The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Ald Tania Campbell says she is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Nkosi.

Campbell worked with Nkosi during his Mayorship from 2001 to 2008.

She says although he and Campbell belonged to opposing political parties, their relationship was founded on mutual respect and professionalism.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the untimely passing of Former Executive Mayor and Former MP, Hon. Duma Nkosi. He was an astute politician who commanded an enormous amount of respect from his peers. I will always remember his gentle and diplomatic leadership approach.”

“As we embark on our journey as a newly formed multi-party coalition, we shall embrace Mayor Nkosi’s ability to constantly exercise political tolerance and humility in our duties. We will miss him dearly,” says Campbell.

Campbell also extended her heartfelt condolences to the Nkosi family, his friends and colleagues during this period of grief.
