We are deemed as less intelligent: Women scientists

Women in the different science fields say they still face challenges ranging from unequal opportunities, discrimination and are deemed as less intelligent. This comes as the country celebrates Women’s Month.

SABC Digital News spoke to women in the fields of palaeoanthropology, chemistry, astronomy and biology. They say they are not recognised as men are in their fields.

Gauteng based botanist, Rebecca Oyerinde says more women need to reach PhD level.

From 2014 to 2016, the National Research Foundation has funded a total of 13 655 female students for their Master’s Doctoral and Postdoctoral studies.

In 2014, a total of 962 female researchers had active NRF Ratings. In 2016, this number had grown by 22% to 1176 researchers.
