Mayosi’s been granted a special provincial official funeral.

Hundreds of mourners have been streaming in to the venue at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) where Professor Mayosi’s funeral service is being held since seven on Saturday morning.

Family, friends, students, academics and colleagues of Mayosi have all come out to say their final goodbyes to the medical giant.

The programme will include a praise and worship service and tributes from Mayosi’s wife and colleagues.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi is also attending the funeral. Other high ranking  government officials in attendance are Minister in the presidency Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Science and Technology Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane and Cooperative Governance Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.

Meanwhile, the Black Academic Caucus at UCT has called on the university to set up an inquiry into the death of the world renowned cardiologist.

The Black Academic Caucus at University of Cape Town (UCT) wants the institution’s council to set up an inquiry into Professor Mayosi’s tragic death.

Caucus spokesperson, Dr Tiri Chinyoka, says an inquiry will bring closure. “What we hope is that we are going to achieve a collective understanding from the UCT community as to what are the circumstances that led to Professor Mayosi taking the decision that he took because what we know is that especially black students have to face those kinds of decisions,” adds Chinyoka.
