The pain and suffering of the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela  was far greater than most people could endure. These were the words of President  Cyril Ramaphosa who visited Mam’ Winnie’s home in Mbhongweni village, outside Mbizana, Eastern Cape.

President Ramaphosa met with the Madikizela family to offer condolences to the bereaved family.

He says Winnie suffered a lot and went through a lot for the country. “At 22, she got married. Five years down the line, her husband was jailed.”

The family threw down the gauntlet to the President, saying the area of her birth remains poor and under-developed. Her brother talks of the bad road infrastructure leading up to the community where Winnie comes from.

A memorial service for the struggle icon is currently underway at the Mphuthumi Mafumbatha sports-ground in Mbizana where thousands of mourners among them high profile leaders have gathered.
