The Nelson Mandela University has promised to act tough on the perpetrators of Monday night’s chaos that brought a premature end to the Varsity Cup rugby match between the Madibaz and the Maties in Port Elizabeth.

The match was abandoned early in the second half after a section of the crowd charged onto the field and threw chairs.

It is believed that the crowd consisted mainly of members of the South African Students Congress (Sasco), who are not happy with the slow rate of transformation at the university.

Madibaz Director of Sport, Yolisa Lumka, says an internal investigation is already underway.

“Considering the reputational damage that has happened for the university, the competition, for the team and for the sport of rugby, it’s definitely something that we cannot ignore. Our security team is receiving all the footage that was floated on the social media. Our security also filmed some of the incidents as they happened.”
