Aretha Franklin is to be laid to rest.

The Queen of Soul’s funeral is currently on the way in Detroit, Michigan in the United States. Aretha Franklin’s funeral will have an epic five-hour service featuring a multitude of preachers, speakers and performers.

Franklin died on 16 August after a year’s long battle with pancreatic cancer, aged 76.

After lying in repose allowing thousands of fans and mourners to pay their last respects, the 18 times Grammy winner, will receive a send-off billed a spiritual awakening and a celebration of black culture.

The programme features the likes of former President Bill Clinton, Bishop TD Jakes and Rev Jess Jackson Senior; performances form Ariana Grande, Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder and a host of family and friends who will pay tribute.

Former President Barack Obama has sent a letter that will be read by the Rev Al Sharpton. The venue, the Detroit Greater Grace Temple, also hosted the funeral service for civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks in 2005.

The hours -long event will conclude before Aretha Franklin’s gold casket is entombed at the Woodlawn Cemetery alongside her late father the Reverend C.L.  Franklin.
