Warrant of arrest issued for activist Bonginkosi Khanyile after failing to appear in court

A warrant of arrest has been issued for activist Bonginkosi Khanyile after failing to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Khanyile was released on R 5 000 bail in September.

He has been charged with five counts of inciting public violence during the July unrest and for lockdown violations by holding an illegal gathering and not wearing a mask while in public.

National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says Khanyile was expected to appear in court on Monday,13 November 2021.

“Bonginkosi Khanyile was meant to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court today. He did not appear and the Magistrate issued a warrant for his arrest. His bail will be forfeited if he does not appear by 10 January and/or provide the court with an acceptable explanation for his absence. His matter was postponed to 8 February 2022 for pre-trial,” says Ramkisson-Kara.

Khanyile was also one of the activists during the ‘Fees Must fall’ protests in South Africa.
