Walters turns to coaching after hanging up his boots

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former Maritzburg United and Cape Town City goalkeeper Shuaib Walters has turned his focus onto grooming the next generation of goalkeepers.

Walters hung up his boots at the end of last season, when injury cut short his season with Ajax Cape Town in the National First Division.

Now Walters, who has relocated to Johannesburg, says he wants to focus on coaching, and at an academy level specifically, and is currently furthering his own education.

Walters, who says the first time he focused on goalkeeping coaching he was already 21, and feels there is a lot neglect in the area at youth level.

Walters, who also played for Bloemfontein Celtic and Mpumalanga Black Aces, says he hopes to change that, and perhaps can help develop future goalkeeping stars.

Walters, who was a member of the 2010 Bafana Bafana World Cup squad but was never capped internationally, says he has already started setting up his goalkeeping academy in Gauteng.

Walters says he wants to give young goalkeepers the right foundation at the academy. Walters will also be holding a goalkeeping camp in December for aspiring young goalkeepers. – Report by Rob Delport
