Residents of Sewende Laan informal settlement in Valhalla Park, Western Cape, where a fire gutted more than 100 informal structures on Tuesday say they hope something good will come from the incident.

The fire has left close to 600 people homeless.

On Wednesday the City of Cape Town started cleaning up the area before it is demarcated. The City will also be issuing starter kits to affected residents to rebuild their homes.

Nolene Pepper, who lost all her belongings, says she is grateful that she at least has a roof over her head.

“When the tragedy strike I was not even at home, I was staying at my mother’s place and I’m just thankful for my sister for being there and she was trying her best to take some stuff out of my house but I’ve lost everything. However, I’m just glad that I have somewhere to go and that is to my mother’s place and I just feel sorry for the other people that don’t even have somewhere to go and I know something good will come out of this,” expressed Pepper.
