The George Municipality in Cape Town, Western Cape has reversed its decision to cancel the lease of its city hall for a performance by Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr.
The municipality had earlier cancelled the lease, after receiving a letter from African National Congress (ANC) Western Cape Secretary Faiez Jacobs requesting that Hofmeyr’s concert be stopped on the grounds that the singer is seen as controversial.
However, the municipality says Hofmeyr can now perform.
Municipality spokesperson Chantel Edwards- Klose says, “The Municipal Manager Trevor Botha says the municipality reconsidered its decision to cancel the booking to hire the town hall to relevant schools for a fundraising event which may go ahead as planned.”
