W. Cape life guards suspend rescue efforts

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Lifeguards have been forced to suspend the search for a 24-year-old man believed to have drowned at Monwabisi beach in the Cape Peninsula due to rough sea conditions.

A SkyMed chopper had earlier been deployed to assist in the search, but has since stood down.

At least five people have drowned in the Western Cape since the start of the festive season.

“The big concern at the moment is of the spring tide. It’s the full moon spring tide. It peaks tomorrow. This week you will see much stronger-than-normal rip currents around the coast. You quite often find during springtide that anglers fishing from rocks, get swept off the rocks because they were fishing there all of last week and the tide never came up that high and suddenly now they’ve been engulfed by the water,” said the NSRI’s Craig Lambinon.
