The Western Cape Social Development Department says it has allocated more than R680 million in the current financial year for programmes aimed at ending women and child abuse.

Minister of Women in the Presidency Susan Shabangu says 2017 has been the worst year nationally for violence against women and children.

Spokesperson for the Provincial Social Department, Sihle Ngobese, says they are calling on more people to report abuse.

“Over these next 16 days Social Development MEC Albert Fritz will embark on numerous events to commemorate this period, including the launch of the DSD Langa local office which expands our footprint and allows us to respond to issues of abuse of women and children. The Department will also host a gender based violence workshop with all our partners including the police, the National Prosecuting Authority, NGO’S and as well look at issues of trauma informed care,” says Ngobese.
