W Cape explores risk management plans to combat bird flu

The Western Cape Economic Opportunities Department says it’s currently exploring risk management plans to deal with possible future outbreaks of bird flu.

There are currently 68 confirmed cases of bird flu in the province.

Earlier this year, more than 2 million birds in the province died of bird flu or were culled. Provincial Minister; Alan Winde says there are no new confirmed cases.

“The industry will continue with clean-up, we need to make sure disinfected hen houses are held clear for a while and tested and then re-stocking can start to take place. I think this is good news for our egg price inflation rate.  I think we’re going to start seeing a plateau as the investments start taking place again and we’ll just be monitoring it very closely,” says Winde.
