Voter turnout in this year’s national elections has dropped significantly with at least 8% less voters going to the polls. In the 2014 general elections, five of the nine provinces had a voter turnout of above 70%.
This year, not a single province recorded a voter turnout above 70%. Gauteng, with 68%, had the highest number of voters going to cast their ballot. The lowest, with just more than 55%, is Limpopo and North West.
The voter turnout in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and North West all dropped by about 10%.
In the Western Cape, a large number of voters also stayed away from the polls and voter turnout was recorded as 65%, seven percent lower than five years ago.
