Vote counting underway in ANC elections

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Polls have closed and counting has started in the crunch ANC elections at Manguang. Voting only got underway early this morning. Some delegates in Mangaung have been celebrating what they say is President Jacob Zuma’s likely re-election as party president.
Zuma is being challenged by his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe for the leadership of the ruling party. The results are expected this afternoon.
Voting for the top six officials was delayed late into the night as ballot papers were being printed. At the start of voting there was confusion among delegates on whether the disputed Free State and North West delegations would vote on separate ballot papers.
Despite objections in the plenary to the proposal, the electoral commission decided to go ahead with different coloured ballot papers for the two provinces. This is a cautionary measure to stop all the election results being invalidated by the courts.
The move was proposed by the electoral commission following the Constitutional Court ruling on the Free State and threats by some North West members to challenge the validity of the results in court. The remaining two days will be dedicated to policy discussions as contained in the Strategy and Tactics document as well as the Organisational Renewal .
