Vote counting is currently taking place in Lesotho following the country’s general elections that took place on Saturday.

Even though there are no clear indications on who is leading, SABC Foreign Editor Sophie Mokoena says there are unconfirmed reports that Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili is leading the race.

Lesotho
voted barely two years after a motion of no confidence passed by the National Assembly against Mosisili.

This is the country’s third election in five years.

Earlier, concerns about the role of the army in the elections lingered, despite assurances from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) that the army would be confined to the barracks.

However, Mokoena says the SABC crew saw a military truck and a small military van in Leribe and Maseru, with a few soldiers in possession of firearms.

Lesotho’s Independent Electoral Commission Chairperson, Judge Mahapela Lehohla, said army presence was unsettling voters and that the matter has been reported to international observers.
