The Vooma Vaccination Campaign will continue in parts of Gauteng on Sunday morning.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage people between the ages of 12 and 60 to get vaccinated.

This comes as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases says seven more people have succumbed to COVID-19 related complications in the country in the latest 24-hour reporting cycle.

The death toll now stands at 89 476. The institute says 306 new coronavirus infections have been recorded taking the total number of cases to 2 925 677.

Vaccination sites have been established on college and university campuses as well as in public spaces across the province.

Over 3.2 million people have been fully vaccinated in Gauteng.

Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi has urged people to get vaccinated before the fourth wave of infections sets in.

Mokgethi says, “As we are also chasing the numbers in this regard, we are also ready for the fourth wave because the scientists are confirming that we will have it. Most of the people get tired and remove the masks and tired of sanitising and so on. So, there’s also issues of attending super-spreader events like we are also worried about the election events.”

North West Premier Bushy Maape says over 38% of people in the province have been vaccinated.

He was speaking during the Vooma Vaccination Campaign in Taung near Vryburg on Saturday.

Maape has conceded that they must do more to convince people to get vaccinated.

He says, “We are all at the same level, so we standing at 37 others are standing at 35, others are standing at 32. So we are doing very fine, 37 relatively to 40 it is not really bad.”

Eastern Cape

Justice and Correctional Services Deputy Minister Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa has visited vaccination sites and taxi ranks in the Amathole District of the Eastern Cape.

Public and private sector, traditional leaders and civil society have joined forces to ensure that South Africa meets the target of vaccinating 70% of the population by next month.

Holomisa was leading the Vooma vaccination campaign on Saturday, to encourage people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

He says, “I also visited the taxi rank where a number of passengers and taxi drivers have come forward to get vaccinated. I impressed upon the people to mobilise their loved ones, colleagues, friends, church members and so on, to get vaccinated.”

Holomisa also announced the launch of the campaign at Bizzah Makhathe Correctional Centre next week in Kroonstad, targeting both officials and inmates.

To date, the department has vaccinated a total of 19 110 officials and 95 639 inmates.
