Ernest Mabaso and Fifita Khupe are facing seven charges of murder, while three charges of rape have been added for one of them

The case against two suspects, Ernest Mabaso and Fifita Khupe, arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of a Vlakfontein family, near Lenasia in the south of Johannesburg, has been postponed to Monday next week in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.

They are facing seven charges of murder, while three charges of rape have been added for one of them. Both accused are allegedly foreign nationals.

Three women and four children were killed at Vlakfontein, early last week. The victims were laid to rest in a mass funeral on Sunday in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Magistrate Maggie van der Merwe says evidence needs to be heard on why one of the accused deserves bail.  “In respect of accused number 1, there is a special request from the investigating officer that you be detained at Johannesburg Central Police station; I have made such an order. Accused number 2 is to be detained at Johannesburg prison and the case is formally postponed to next week Monday – 12-11-2018 – specifically for a bail application in respect of accused number 2 only.”
