VIDEO: Woman in Waiting 20 years into democracy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Acclaimed South African actress and playwright (among other skills) Thembi Mtshali-Jones and director Yaël Farber, collaborated to create a play that captures the struggles women faced during the apartheid era, through Mtshali-Jones’s biography.

Mtshali-Jones takes us through her life and how as a child, she waited to see her mother once a year for Christmas.

As sad as that must sound, her moving to Durban later on made her aware of the sacrifices that she too would have to make just as her mother did to survive during that time.

In light of South Africa’s 20 years of independence, this solo performance encourages us to consider our heritage and the sacrifices elders made for us to enjoy certain freedoms.
