South Africa’s Tokyo medallists embark on victory parade in Gauteng

The seven South African athletes who won medals at the recent Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games are being honoured with a victory parade in Gauteng.

The Olympians won three medals in total, a gold and a silver by swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker who also set a new world record in the 200 metres breaststroke, and a silver by surfer Bianca Buitendag.

The Paralympians outshone their able-bodied counterparts and won seven medals.

Ntando Mahlangu was the star of the show, winning two of Team South Africa’s four gold medals, in the men’s long jump with a new world record and in the 200 metres sprint.

The other gold medals were won by Pieter du Preez in the wheelchair time trial and Anrune Weyers in the women’s 400 metres.

Visually impaired athlete, Louzanne Coetzee, also bagged two medals,  a silver in the women’s 1500 metres and a bronze in the marathon.

The parade started at the Union Buildings and from Pretoria moved on to Tembisa, the Alexandra Township and Sandton before coming to an end in the Johannesburg City Centre.
