The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says the prolonged Vhembe District Municipality demarcation saga in Limpopo is once again threatening the two day voter registration process for the 2019 national elections which started Sunday.

IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo says voter registration got off to a positive start with more than 99% of the voting stations country wide open and functional.

Mamabolo says provincial electoral commission staff and community leaders in the Vhembe area are engaging in an extra-ordinary meeting with the intention of finding a solution to the impasse.

“The Vhembe district in the Collins Chabane municipality around the Vuwani area, there is an ongoing municipal demarcation dispute that has affected voter registration operation. Provincial election staff are closely working with the community leaders and security agencies to ensure voting stations open as soon as possible to allow citizens to enjoy their constitutional right to register as voters.”
