Van Breda recounts family killings ordeal

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Triple murder accused, Henri van Breda, has told the Cape Town High Court that he had become confused and disoriented after witnessing the killing of his family members. He’s on trial for the murder of his parents and older brother in January 2015.

He testified that he fell off the stairs of their De Zalze home after wrestling with an axe wielding intruder who he alleges killed his family.

Van Breda’s defence counsel Piet Botha wanted to find out why he did not call the police and emergency services shortly after the attack.  He said he does not know but should probably have done so in hindsight.

He testified that he first called his then girlfriend Bianca van der Westhuizen but the call never went through.

He later googled the emergency number and made the call.  The soft spoken 22-year-old told the court he saw his mother’s body and her sister on the floor before blacking out for a second time. The trial continues.
