Health systems specialist Professor Ramneek Ahluwalia says the government’s rollout of vaccines will be crucial to controlling any future waves of COVID-19.

The government has started with Phase Two of the vaccine rollout with people over the age of 60 being vaccinated.

The peak of the third wave of the virus could arrive in a few months’ time.

President Ramaphosa raises concern about a possible third wave of coronavirus infections in SA

Prof Ahluwalia says people must continue to practice the basics – such as wearing masks, social distancing and regular handwashing. Poorly ventilated areas should also be avoided.

He says the vaccines will also play a key role.

Increase in infections

Figures from the Health Department on Saturday showed that the Northern Cape has almost 7 780 active cases which are the second-highest in the country after Gauteng. The total number of new coronavirus cases recorded countrywide on Saturday exceeded the 4 000 marks for the first time since the 3rd of February after 4 234 cases were recorded.

Professor Barry Schoub, Chair of the Ministerial Advisory Council on COVID-19 vaccines, says the country should be concerned about the increase in infections:

South Africa has recorded 2 893 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, taking the total number to 1 635 465.
