The United States was committed to a workable solution to the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol and the
“architecture” of a future regime governing emissions, US climate envoy Todd Stern told the UN COP17 conference.
In one of the shortest national statements today, Stern called on world leaders to find “common ground” for “robust action” to be taken now and in future.
Todd sang the praises of his government’s green efforts, saying motor vehicle efficiency was to be doubled by 2025, and that $95bln had already been spent on installing green technology.
The US motoring sector was searching for technology which would give 54km to the gallon. The US had provided $5.1bn in fast-start climate assistance.
“We’re developing policies and mechanisms” to mobilise $100bn for climate change action by 2020. He was thanked by the chair for “keeping on time”.
