Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa says as South Africa continues to play an integral part in the Southern African Customs Union, unity remains important among member states. Ramaphosa was speaking on the side-lines of the 6th annual SACU Summit in Gaborone, Botswana.

Top of the agenda at the 6th annual SACU Summit is the ministerial Work Programme and reviewing the current SACU agreement.

The five countries – South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia – which form part of the union meet annually and look at ways of making trade easier between member states.

Botswana currently chairs the oldest customs union in the world spanning over 100 years.

The country’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi told delegates and high dignitaries attending the summit that there is a need for the organisation to strengthen during tough economic times.

Masisi has highlighted the importance for member states of the Southern African Customs Union to react proactively, collectively strategically to the current economical challenges facing the world if they are to succeed as a customs union.

The Summit noted that much progress has been made in the ministerial Work Programme. It also resolved that the implementation process entails further consultations.

The five member states have also taken a decision to meet in September in 2018 to engage on SACU’s strategic direction.
