This democracy is based on human dignity, equality and freedom – in which each and every citizen is equally protected by the law.
This year’s celebrations will be held at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown. Under the theme: “Working together to promote unity in diversity and human dignity for all” – President Jacob Zuma will give the keynote speech. The theme is in recognition of the foundation laid by the Freedom Charter for the Constitution and Bill of Rights that South Africa has today.

Walter Sisulu Square – Brief historical background

Released from prison in 1989, he died in 2003, the year the R160-million Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication project was initiated. Walter Sisulu Square is in the heart of Kliptown, Soweto. The Square embraces a unique historical background, South African culture at its best, mingled up with modern urbanisation, trendsetting what South Africa is best known for, its diverse cultures and way of life, a total fascination to the outside world and those abroad. It is a Heritage site that doesn’t fail to capture its audience. Other events will take place around the country.
