Unisa strike sparks registration chaos

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Students and prospective students arriving at the University of South Africa campuses have been forced to return due to a strike by the institution’s staff.

Workers affiliated to National Health Education and  Allied Workers Union are demanding a 12% salary increase while Unisa is offering 6.5%.

Unisa re-opened applications on Monday for first time undergraduates students. The closing date is Friday.

On Tuesday, there was chaos when walk-in applicants and students wanting to register jumped over the gates.

The South African Student Congress blockaded the entrance into the university, preventing staff and prospective students from accessing the campus.

In return, the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command fought for access onto the campus.
