The University of South Africa (Unisa) says it has started processing National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) allowance payments. This is after students raised concerns about delays in receiving their allowances for last month.
Unisa is one of the country’s largest higher education institutions, with more than 380 000 students and around 177 000 funded by Nsfas.
The university says the payment process is highly complex.
Unisa’s Acting Chief Financial Officer, Liana Joubert says payment batches began being processed last Friday and eligible students are now receiving their allowances.
“From Friday onwards, we started processing the payment batches and our students began receiving their remittance advice from Friday. I can confirm that, as of today, all eligible students have received their remittance advice and the allowances will be paid. This is predominantly not a Unisa issue. Of course, it is a systemic issue rather than a Unisa issue, but we have managed the process exceptionally well from our side.”
