South Africans gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 27 April to celebrate Freedom Day, under the theme “Mobilising society towards consolidating our democracy and freedom”. Members of the public shared the space with government officials, and national and international VIP guests to hail 19 years of democracy.
The proceedings included musical and cultural performances, performances by the military band, and a cultural parade.Formal speeches by political parties and President Jacob Zuma were preceded by a 21-gun salute, military fly past, and the singing of the national anthem.
