UN supports new elections in Zimbabwe

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The United Nations has thrown it’s support behind new elections in Zimbabwe set for July this year.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Head, Achim Steiner, says only free, fair and credible elections will contribute towards the rebuilding of Zimbabwe’s economy.

The country has been in an economic crisis since the early 2000s due to poor policies imposed by former President, Robert Mugabe.

Steiner is in Zimbabwe as part of the UN program to assist African countries with development projects.

He says President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reassured him of his commitment to ensure that the upcoming elections meet international standards.
