The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has congratulated the government and people of Zambia, after that country’s electoral commission declared opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema President-elect.

The UPND leader won the presidential elections with more than 2.8-million votes over incumbent President Edgar Lungu’s 1.8-million.

Hichilema has thanked his predecessor for graciously conceding.

UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says, “The Secretary-General congratulates the government and people of Zambia as well as the electoral authorities on the conduct of the August 12 General Elections. The overall peaceful conduct of the elections is a clear testament to the continued commitment of the Zambian people to upholding Zambia’s democracy, peace, and stability. The UN will continue to support the people and government of Zambia in their efforts for a democratic, stable and prosperous country.”
