Umhlanga Beaches have been reopened after a sewerage spill earlier this week forced their closure.

The eThekwini Municipality shut the beaches down after a pipe burst‚ spilling sewage into the water and onto the promenade.

Spokesperson for the Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct, Cara Reiley says residents can rest easy as all beaches are now safe.

“The Umhlanga beaches are all open. The municipal waste water Department worked through the night to find the problem along the sewer line and fixed and thankfully it was a crisis that didn’t go on for too long. It is sewerage so there are always gonna be potential health risks that’s why the beaches we’re closed and it was assessed that the beaches we’re fine to use again and they were then opened.”
